Golden Gate Fencing Center believes that champions are made, not born. We believe that coaches, teammates and families are core ingredients of all great youth sports programs. We know, that fencing can be a sport for all kids of all abilities and that we have created the best youth program in the Bay Area for exactly this purpose.

What You Can Expect.
Some believe that chivalry is extinct – we know better. This code of conduct was invented as part of our ancient sport and it continues to be one of the most important teachings of fencing. All fencers are required to treat their opponents with respect, fairness, and gratitude. These values are embedded in our youth programs. They are not just valuable lessons printed in the rule book; they are practiced every time you are on the strip. We are proud supporters of the Positive Coaching Alliance and all of our coaching staff are PCA certified.

Fencing will also develop concentration, ambition, imagination, perception and analytical thinking. These skills are utilized and developed every time one fences. Combine these skills with fencing’s aerobic conditioning and you have a complete mental and physical sport.

Our coaches are committed to bringing out the best in every fencer. Our programs are designed so that each child gets the individual attention and the development that they need. We ensure that fencing is fun and that it becomes a productive part of each fencer’s routine.

Fencing is also very safe and all the equipment is designed to protect the fencer. Fencers are never allowed to fence without protection. The first thing a fencer will be taught is the importance of safety and how the equipment works. We ensure that care is taken in following the rules and that there is respect for all weapons. We also teach proper stretching and warm up so that muscle soreness and strains are minimized. Fencing has one of the lowest rates of injury of any sport. We intend to keep it that way.

Costs and Particulars

Our program is divided into two levels: developmental and competitive. The developmental group is aimed at teaching young children the FUNdamentals of fencing in a positive and challenging environment. Divided into three classes (Bronze, Silver, Gold) the developmental group allows young zorros to progress from learning the basics to entering local competitions.

All equipment is provided for the first three months of instruction at the Bronze level. After that, it is expected that fencers will purchase their own equipment. Costs vary based on the age and skill level of a fencer. We can help you estimate these costs when you enroll. Please download the application here. Please fill this out and bring this with you when you come to your first class.

What You Can Expect.
Some believe that chivalry is extinct, we don’t. This code of conduct was invented as part of our sport. It continues to be one of the most important teachings of fencing. All fencers are required to treat their opponents with respect and gratitude. You will see this is a part of the character of our community. It is not just a valuable lesson printed in the rulebook; it is practiced every time you are on the strip. It is who we are and what we do.

Fencing will also help develop concentration, ambition, imagination, perception and analytical thinking. These skills are utilized and developed every time you fence. This will be combined with fencing’s aerobic conditioning that improves endurance and coordination. Fencing is also an excellent way to lose some weight and get into shape. Half of your class will be spent learning footwork and hand movements. This will also include overall physical conditioning. The remaining time will be spent fencing and improving your bouting technique.

Our coaches are committed to bringing out the best in every fencer. Classes are designed so that each person gets the individual attention and the development that they need. We ensure that fencing is fun and becomes a productive part of each fencer’s routine.

We want you to know about safety. Fencing is very safe and all the equipment is designed to protect the fencer’s. Fencers are never allowed to fence without protection. The first thing a fencer will be taught is the importance of safety and how the equipment works. We ensure that care is taken in following the rules and that there is respect for all weapons.
